Lunchtime in the Balcony Garden

The carrots, lettuce, tomatoes and other goodies have been going into my lunchbox of late. Of course working at the uni I don't get to enjoy the balcony garden view while eating the balcony garden treats. Someone, or something, however, has enjoyed both the garden view AND my purple sprouting broccoli

Any idea of who the hungry hungry culprit is????

My guess would be slugs or cabbage worms. Seen any small white butterflies around?

I was thinking the same thing as Dan--cabbage worm. They're small, green hungry buggers. Bt is a natural product that is supposed to rid you of them.

Heh. Your gardening friend has been busy. I think he's been sampling my broccoli as well.

Dan and Grace, I fear you are right. The pyrethrum aimed at the aphids got some green caterpillars too (which hurricaine J threatened to eat, the caterpillars that is, not the eggs!!!!)

CityGarden - might be time to take action!

Fern - oh no! Grrr to naughty hungry little caterpillars. Although I have to hand it to him he is bi-continental! Wierd to think we are both growing the same crop at the same time, yet in very different seasons!

If you're looking for a less toxic option, I'd recommend white oil for the aphids and Dipel for the caterpillars. Dipel's a natural bacteria in powder form you mix with water and spray on ... when the caterpillars eat it, they stop eating and starve to death. Pyrethium is pretty toxic, it kills "good" bugs like bees and ladybugs as well as bad bugs.
