Driven to Basil Distraction

Ugh thesis writing is keeping me away from the blog and away from the garden. Infuriating!!! Plus my camera is getting dithery in its old age and barely any photos from it are useable. The guest post from the lego people is coming soon, they promise me. Thanks for all your comments on the few posts I manage to write in this busy time, it keeps my spirits alive (writing a thesis on Nazi memoirs can be altogether draining on the grey matter.) In the mean time enjoy some thai basil that in my time starved life at present has gone to seed.

Prue, I know the last thing you need is an extra reading recommendation while you're knee-deep in serious Nazi-era stuff, but I just spent my spare time in 2009 reading all the Bernie Gunther detective novels written by Scotsman Philip Kerr, and all of them are set in Nazi-era Germany. Bernie doesn't like the Nazis all that much (understatement) but he has a heart of gold plus a lot of really good, lippy one-liners. The 'Berlin Noir' trilogy is the place to start coming down off the serious stuff.
Apart from this recommendation, good luck with the thesis, and remember that all plants which cark it due to thesis stress can be replaced by new ones, which won't.

Don't worry the basil is still fine to use, you can eat the flowers too. It's not like the parsley and lettuce relatives where when it goes to seed it doesn't taste as nice. It just makes fewer leaves when it's concentrating on the flowers. But the bees LOVE the flowers so hopefully you'll have a few more visitors.

I've got an African blue basil, an ornamental type, that the bees adore. And it smells lovely if you brush against it.

Jamie - thanks for the support and recommendation, I'll look out for it when I get a chance to do some personal reading. heheh love a reason to get new plants :)

Kate - defnitely tasty and lovely flowers.

Alexa - on closer inspection I realised this was the purple basil, I have thai basil too, and lemon and lime. They are great! And yes still edible. I still eat the lettuce when it bolts, but I am a bit of a freak. :) Blue basil sounds awesome!
