Slightly off Sunflowers

Since the windy day of a month ago destroyed my giant sunflowers, I have had to make do with one smaller, multiheaded sunflower until the later planted 5 or so others in various pots make it to the flowering stage. This yellow sunflower has given me a lot of lovely heads in the past few weeks, though it was not without some problems.

Problem number 1 - the sunflower head that forgot to grow a stem!

The poor flower head ended up growing into the main stem and put out a few petals at various angles. Problem number 2 - I don't actually have a photograph of but it is the sunflower that only got 2/3rds of the way there. The head is fully formed on one side, and half formed on the otherside, leaving it very lopsided. Kind of like the elephant man of the sunflower world.

Not all sunflowers get it right but even in their munted, awkward shapes these heads make me smile. Now to wait and see what the next ones look like ...

Lovely sunflowers! Im growing a mutant sunflower that is 3m tall and has 27 blooms, all the way up the stem! The large one at the top is open, but the others are still closed. It really is a crazy flower. I'll post a pic soon pn my blog.

I grew sunflowers last year and they started toppling over for some reason. They weren't even fully grown! I'm trying again this year. I love sunflower seeds and I can't wait to harvest the heads!

Funkbunny - what an awesome mutant sunflower, 27 blooms! I can't wait to see the pics on your blog.

Kalena Michele- I usually have to stake mine because of the wind, maybe this might help yours too? Sunflowers are so pretty, especially the ones that aren't just yellow! Maybe different varieties will be stronger too.

Sunflowers are such a delight to watch while they bloom. I love their pouty buds!

Sunflowers are meant to make us smile, I think -- perhaps that's why they so often stray from what we think they should look like. :)

That one bloom is quite strange. Nice to see sunflowers nonetheless.

Cut pics. My sunflowers - which are just the sprouts from seeds spilled from the bird feeders - are usually kind of weird looking, too.

I tried growing sunflowers this year, it really didn't work for me! I planted 2 seeds in each spot but several spots didn't come up at all and the one that did come off died off really quickly. I'm jealous!

Alexa - a friend of mine had the same trouble. Maybe different varieties would fare better?
